AI requires large amounts of water to cool data centers that handle billions of prompts per day. By 2030, 1,200 billion liters of the Earth’s scarce freshwater resources will be drained by AI each year. As AI’s demand for water grows, access to clean water remains a growing public health concern, with 2.1 billion people deprived of this basic necessity. 

Bottle it Back is a program that makes the hidden cost of AI visible and measurable by tracking every prompt on major AI chat platforms including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The platform estimates user’s Water Consumption Footprint based on the water and electricity required to run data centers, with consumption changing depending on the platform, model, and prompt length. 

Bottle it Back is the only program that allows users to offset their water footprint by letting them give back the amount of water they consume to Planet Water Foundation, a non-profit organization providing safe water access to communities in need across 33 countries. 

In just a few weeks, the program was installed in 50 countries, with 38,000+ bottles being donated to the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The campaign was a finalist at the New York Festivals and was voted one of the top three campaigns in the Environment category at the ACT Tributes to Creativity during the 2026 Cannes Lions Festival.
