Bringing slain journalists back on air

The Philippines remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists, with over 200 media workers killed since 1986. Most of them were silenced for exposing crime and corruption without fear, up to their very last reports.

To continue the fight for justice, the Filipino Broadcasters Association, the country’s foremost organization protecting free media, brought them back on air one last time through AI.

An audio campaign was launched featuring slain radio broadcasters Cris Bundoquin and Rex Cornelio Pepino. The spots re-aired their final reports using AI-reconstructed voices where they reported on their own murder cases, and urged listeners to continue the fight for justice and press freedom.

To ensure an accurate voice match, archived radio recordings were collected and processed using a text-to-speech and AI voice generation tool. Sound engineers perfected each journalist’s distinct tone, pacing, diction, and pronunciation with every line. The ads aired in a national roadblock across 300+ stations on World Radio Day. The campaign has been recognized globally, bagging a Silver pencil in Radio Advertising and Bronze in Use of Technology at the AWARD Awards, and a Merit Award for Creative Use of Technology at the ONE Asia Creative Awards.
